a red-footed booby

 

a kind of bird – sea bird – with a cigar shaped body, long pointed wings and beak (bill); webbed feet like that of a duck; grows to 2-3 feet (65-85 cm) long and weighs 1.5 – 2 Kg.; feeds (eats) on fish; ten (?) species found all over the world, especially in warm waters

Special Features:

Boobies are clumsy on land – very slow and so easily caught and killed.

Female boobies are larger than male boobies.

They are well suited for fishing – dive (jump into water from above) into water and (pursue fish) swim after fish to catch them.

Figures of Speech:
1.

a booby =   (a) a dull, stupid person (b) (usually in plural – ‘boobies’) a women’s breast (tits) (Not to be used in formal speech)

2.

booby prize  =  a prize given as a joke to a person who scores the lowest or who comes last in a sport event or any competition

3.

to beat the booby  =  to keep or rub under one’s armpits to warm them

4.

a booby trap  =

(a) some practical joke, such as a bucket of water or a bag of flour kept on a door so that it falls on the person who he/she opens the door

(b) a hidden bomb, usually hidden in or under some harmless or unsuspected places, which explodes when touched or stepped on by an innocent person

5.

a booby will never make a hawk [a saying which means a bird that allows itself to be easily caught and killed can never itself become a bird of prey, like a hawk, which when applied to people means a person who is easily controlled by others will never become the controller him-or herself]
