boar  –  bore

[the same pronunciation]

He said it was found that the panthers were straying in search of wild bores, stray cattle and dogs which gather…………………….
This paper cutting from a reputed newspaper shows us how these words are confused!  In the above sentence the word “bores” must be ‘boars’ which means ‘(male) pigs’.

 

 

 

 

 

Boar” (noun) is ‘a male pig (wild or domestic)’,

e.g.

The hunter shot two wild boar.

Bore” as a noun is

(drilling a bore/hole in a piece of wood with a drill)

(a) ‘a round hole made in the ground by drilling, usually for water, oil, etc.’;

 

(b) ‘a person who makes other lose interest in him/her by silly or long talk’;

(c) ‘a large wave along a river’;

and as a verb, it is

(a) ‘the past form of bear —- bear – bore – born/borne [see also “bare – bear”] ;

(a hand pump to draw water from a bore/bore-well)

(b) ‘to make a round, deep hole in the ground’,

(c) ‘to make other feel uninterested or dull by silly or long talk –– bore – bored – bored’,

 

e.g.

The Water Works Department dug three bores in our area.

I wonder how you are going to work with him; he’s such a bore!

The Oil Commission is planning to bore some more holes in our fields.

the speaker was a bore

The speaker bored us all with his stupid experiences.
