blanch – blench
[slightly different vowel sound; and in the current usage, 'blanch' is often used in place of "blench" to mean 'shy away or move away out of fear']
“Blanch” is ‘to take the colour out of something; to make plants colourless by not letting light; to show whiteness in the face out of fear, cold; to become pale; to prepare vegetables by putting them in boiling water’,
e.g.
The new clerk blanched when the boss told him that he was dismissed from the job.
“Blench” is ‘to make a sudden, quick movement in fear; to move away from lack of courage’,
e.g.
She blenched when she heard a loud noise in the dark street.
