‘Batter’, as a noun, is also used to refer to (a) a semi-liquid mixture of flour, milk and eggs used in cooking — other spelling ‘bater’ (b) the slope of the outer wall face that recedes from bottom to top (c) in printing, a damaged area (spot) on the face of a type or plate; and as a verb, ‘batter’ means ‘to hit (something or someone) heavily and repeatedly’.
