bass

(pronunciation: the letter ‘a’ rhymes with the letter ‘a’ in “hat”)

a bass

a kind of fish – (perch-like fish) – a general name given to different species (kinds) of popular game fish (fish hunted for fun or sport); found in fresh and salt waters; many species (kinds) are native to North America and surrounding waters;

Some common names of bass are: temperate bass – striped bass, white bass, etc.; black bass – large mouth bass, small mouth bass, spotted bass, etc.

Many other species (kinds) are also known as basses, but they are not true bass: butterfly peacock bass, speckled peacock bass, Papuan black bass, Australian bass, rock bass, American striped bass and British sea bass.

As the name includes different species, it not possible to give a general description of any one particular kind – each species of bass has its own length, width and weight, and life span.

The word ‘bass’ used to refer to a musical instrument or a human voice that gives out very low notes, e.g. a bass voice or a bass drum, rhymes with the word “base“.

Special Features:
‘Largemouth bass’ is the state fish of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Mississippi;

‘Kentucky spotted bass’ — Kentucky;

‘stripped bass’ — New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina;

‘white bass’ – Oklahoma,

and ‘Guadalupe bass’ – Texas (the states in the USA).

It is an important commercial (for food) and sport fish.  The sport fishing industry bloomed in the USA, particularly in Florida Keys because of this fish!
