bandmaster:

(plural: ‘bandmasters‘)

the head of a band of musicians, who directs or conducts the band, usually military and circus bands (‘dance music’ and ‘classical music’  are not included);

a bandleader,

a bandmaster leading a military band

e.g.

In the British Armed Forces, a bandmaster is always a warrant officer class 1.

During recession, several young men from our region had joined army bands and by the time they retired, most of them became bandmasters.
