a person whose job is to help an ambassador of one country in another country;

a qualified person who is attached to the administrative staff of a diplomat or a head of a state,

e.g.

There are several kinds of attachés: military/defence attaché, cultural attaché, commercial attaché, press attaché, etc.

The duties of a kind of attaché depends greatly on the area of his specialty, i.e. a military attaché helps the military officers do their job more effectively; a press attaché looks after the publicity side of his boss’s activities and a commercial attaché sees that the transactions of trade and commerce are done smoothly and profitably.

‘Attache’ or ‘attache case’ is more commonly used to refer to a thin box with a handle and lid, also called ‘briefcase’, used for carrying sheets of papers, important documents or money.
