Back in the days of ‘gold rush’ in the States, there used to be an assayer in an assayer’s office in every little town and the prospectors went there to get their ‘gold’ assayed to know whether it was real gold or just ‘fool’s gold’.
Those experts who assay, i.e. analyse or test, precious metals are called ‘gold-and-silver’ assayers.
