a person who tests the metals for their quality and who tests the metal-bearing soil (ore) to find out what kind of materials are present in it by using chemicals or other methods,

e.g.

Back in the days of ‘gold rush’ in the States, there used to be an assayer in an assayer’s office in every little town and the prospectors went there to get their ‘gold’ assayed to know whether it was real gold or just ‘fool’s gold’.

Those experts who assay, i.e. analyse or test, precious metals are called ‘gold-and-silver’ assayers.
