one of the five great apes, chimpanzee

a kind of animal – mammal – large monkey without a tail, but with a lot of hair; there are five kinds: orang-utan, gorilla, chimpanzee (& bonobo or pygmy chimpanzee), gibbon and human; found in Asia and Africa

Figures of Speech:

1.

ape = (verb) to imitate others in a thoughtless manner; (noun) a person who imitates; a clumsy, dirty and ill-mannered person; a man with a large hairy body

2.

to go ape (also ‘to go ape-shit’) = to go wrong mentally; to go wild, act crazy; to be reduced to animal instincts – no logical thinking; very excited

3.

as drunk as an ape = very, very drunk – having too much alcohol

4.

as wise as an ape

5.

to lead apes in hell = to die unmarried

6.

old apes have old eyes = experienced people see things that inexperienced ones cannot or do not see

7.

the higher the ape climbs, the more he shows his arse (ass/back part) = the higher a man’s position is, the more he shows his indecent nature
