anaesthetist:

(in American usage: ‘anesthetist’; also ‘anesthesiologist’; plural: ‘anaesthetists‘)

‘Anaesthesia’ is a body condition in which a person or animal loses sensation, i.e. they do not feel any pain when in that condition. This may be due to damage to the nerves or due to some drug/medicine that is given, and ‘anaesthetic’ is a drug/medicine that an anaesthetist or anesthesiologist gives to patients that are to be treated or operated on.

a qualified medical doctor or nurse who gives anaesthetic (= sleep causing drug) to a patient before the patient is operated on by a surgeon or treated by a physician,

an anaesthetist giving anaesthesia to a patient

e.g.

It is the responsibility of the anaesthetist to see to that the patient who is to be operated is in good condition and he/she is completely under the influence of the anaesthetic so that he/she does not feel any pain or does not move when the surgery is going on.

An anaesthetist must have a good idea of how much anaesthetic is to be given to what kind of patient.

Note: An anaesthetist/anesthetist may be a qualified and trained doctor or nurse but an anesthesiologist is a qualified doctor, and this term is mostly found in the American usage.
