(plural — amphibians or amphibia; pronunciation: the letters ‘phi’ are said with an ‘f’ sound as in “fig”)

any kind of animal that can live in water and on land i.e. they spend early stages of their life in water taking oxygen from water and spend their adult stage on land and in water taking oxygen from air; there are about 5,918 species (kinds) of amphibians all over the world  — frogs, toads, salamanders, newts and gymnophiona are amphibians
