Alsatian
(also in American English ‘German Shepherd’)
a kind of dog – large and looks like a wolf; commonly used in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and the Common wealth countries
Alsatians are named after a disputed area ‘Alsace’ between France and Germany. They are relatively a new breed, put into use only since 1899, mostly during the World War I.
They were originally bred by shepherds to guard their sheep, but because they are very intelligent, brave, loyal and, more importantly, obedient to their masters, they have been introduced in the military and police work. It is now one of the few best breeds of dogs that are not only guard dogs, protecting and helping people, but also popular pets.
