aloud   —   allowed

[These two words have the same pronunciation as in ‘allowed’]

Aloud” means ‘in a loud voice’,

e.g.

The students were asked to sing the song aloud.

Allowed” is the past and the past participle of the verb word ‘allow’ which means ‘to permit or let somebody do something’,

e.g.

You are not allowed to use a red ink pen in the exam.

Common Errors:

1.  Is it allowed to smoke in this room?  [wrong]

Are we allowed to smoke in this room?  [right]

OR

Is smoking allowed in this room?  [right]

compare:

Visitors are not allowed to talk aloud in a hospital.
