aisle   —   isle

[These two words have the same pronunciation; the letter ‘s’ is silent in both words.]

These two words have the same sound.  Extra care should be taken when listening to others or when doing the listening comprehension tasks.

Aisle” means ‘a narrow passage separating the rows of seats in a theatre, a church, or a passage between rows of shelves in a large shop, supermarket, etc.’.

e.g.

She fainted in the aisle of the church.

Isle” means ‘an island’.  This word is mostly used in poetry and proper nouns.

e.g.

We are planning to visit either the British Isles or the Sicily Isles next summer.
