agnostic:

(plural: ‘agnostics‘)

a typical agnostic, agrees with neither this side nor that side

a person who does not believe (or does not know) that a god exists; a person who believes that it is not possible for humans to know whether or not God in the real sense exists;

a person who is very doubtful about something that other people believe; a person who thinks that an answer to a particular question is not known for sure; a sceptic;

e.g.

Mrs Jones is a lifelong agnostic, and though she does not say that there is no God, she believes that people cannot know whether or not there is God.

A theist believes in the existence of God, an atheist does not believe in the existence of God, and an agnostic thinks that people cannot prove or disprove the existence of God!

‘Agnostic’ in its adjective form is used as commonly as it is in its noun form, e.g. ‘agnostic attitude’,  ”I have some unanswered agnostic questions. Are there any atheists or theists willing to answer them?”, “Agnostic humanists are those people who believe that serving fellow humans is more important than worshipping God.”

Return to “atheist“.
